I think that I will take advantage of my newly imposed time off and hop a train to the usa.
Alone.
By myself.
Just me and my thoughts and a camera - and a pen.
Oh, and a backpack.
I want to see Santa Fe, or El Paso - whichever is prettier.
I want to see Albuquerque and Denver and Chicago which, according to the amtrak map I have little choice but to see.
A friend to whom I told my plans wants to buy me a copy of On The Road. That's cool, I finally get the chance to read it. I hope that it's as good as how I imagine it to be.

Also, pick up a copy of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire.
If you're taking a train, you'll have PLENTY of reading time.
(Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintainance is another good travel read if you haven't read it yet.)

Sounds like a very cool trip, I'm jealous. (And I personally would vote Santa Fe as a destination.)

Arr!
Thanks for the suggestions. :)
I think that El Paso will win out over Santa Fe for the simple reason that it's walking distance from Ciudad Juarez.
Mind you, I could still do both...

Thank you.
I hope that I find that elusive thing too, or at least an indication of where it might be found.

Sounds like a great idea. Have a good trip.

(Like everyone else, I'll recommend some literature. Continent by Jim Crace.)

How could I not come to Denver?
So far it's looking like some kind of mashup of:
Montreal > New York > Chicago(stay)
Chicago > Denver(stay)
Denver > Raton (what do you know about Raton other than in french it means rat)
Raton > Santa Fe > Albuquerque
Albuqurque > El Paso / Ciudad Juarez

and then I don't know...

Raton Pass?

It's the pass you go over to get into New Mexico. It's deadly in the winter. I'm pretty sure there is nothing there. I could be wrong, I just drive right past it. I think it's a "gas, food, lodging" type of place with the added ambiance of horrible winter weather.

Drop me a line at nephthys0xA at gmail dot com (that's a zero, not an oh).

I'm sorry I've been idle, Stan. Just keep in mind you never strayed from my thoughts, ever. Keep in mind there are lots of people who lost what they loved most, but it gave them a chance to find something else they loved even more. The world is your oyster.

Are you only briefly stopping in Chicago? If you're a big baseball fan (I am!), St. Louis has some great Cards games this time of year in their new stadium. But, eh...I still hope I get to see you. We've known each other for sooo long.

Nonetheless, I hope you have a fabulous time. xo.

Gorgeous idea!!!!!!! I think the best way to see this country is by road (or train), just to see the landscape change (Texas is pretty cool to see change from urban to prairie to cactus in El Paso). I took a road trip to my first duty station from Pennsylvania to Arizona.

Take tons of photos!
